The smiling faces of the daffodil have inspired many poets as well as botanists, perhaps because the sunny disposition of its yellow blooms that last up to 6 days. William Wordsworth wrote “…Ten thousand saw I at a glance, tossing their heads in sprightly dance.” Probably deriving its name from “affodyle,” the old English word for “early comer,” in Shakespeare’s day they were often nicknamed daff-a-down-dilly or daffodilly.
