June Facts
Birth Flower: Rose, Hybrid Tea
Botanical Name: Rosa spp. and hybrids
Pronunciation: ROW-za
Availablity: year-round
Decorative Life: 4-12 days
About This Flower:
The rose is a symbol of undying love and passion as rich as the hue of each soft petal and as exquisite as the perfume of each bloom. One of the oldest flowers known to man, in the Middle Ages when most plants were grown for practical purposes, the rose was cultivated for its beauty alone. The tea rose – possibly named because it arrived in a shipment of tea from China -- first appeared in Europe at the end of the 18th century. Today, the hybrid tea rose consists of one large bloom atop a long stem.
Birth Stone: Pearl
A pearl is the product
of an oyster's defense mechanism. When a
foreign irritant is introduced either by man (cultured) or naturally,
the
oyster immediately surrounds it with layers of a substance called nacre.
This forms the exquisite gemstone know as pearl. Pearls
come in a wide range of colors, should be as perfectly round, and free
from skin blemishes. The measure of a pearl's value is it's luster and
size.
Ancient
mythology connected the pearl to the moon because of its
soft, glowing appearance and the belief that pearls were teardrops from
the moon that fell into the sea. Ancient Chinese believed pearls had the
power to perpetuate eternal youth. Even to this day, pearls are often
ground and used in Chinese cosmetics to promote youthful looking skin.
Pearls have been
recognized as the emblem of modesty, chastity & purity, and
have come to symbolize a happy marriage.
Moonstone
is sometimes used as an alternative by those born in June,
as it physically resembles and is less-expensive than some pearls
